Ashe calls for gasoline tax suspension
Consumers deserve relief as prices skyrocket
In light of the recent spike in gas prices for Georgia’s motorists, I joined other House Democratic Caucus leaders inasking the Governor to suspend the 4 cent motor fuel sales tax for 60 days.
We are also calling on the Governor to do an assessment of motor fuel prices during that period to determine a long term solution to lowering the cost for the consumer.
As treasurer of the House Democratic Caucus, I signed a letter to the Governor that states in part, “It is our hope that you will recognize the burdens of the high cost of gasoline on Georgia’s driving public at this time and take immediate action. Families are struggling throughout our state to make ends meet and having to pay over $3 a gallon in some places is simply unacceptable.”
The letter continues, “Our state currently has almost a $1 billion surplus which makes the suspension of the motor fuel tax a viable option. Should your action require the approval of the General Assembly this approval can be granted in January rather than incurring the cost of a special session. Thank you for your consideration in this very important matter.”
